    First edition. Inscribed by Barnum to his friend and neighbor, John D. Candee, editor of the Bridgeport Standard newspaper and later president of the Bridgeport Library Association: "John D. Candee Esq., with kind regards of The Author. Bridgeport, Conn. Dec 1st, 1865."Small octavo. 424 pages plus eight pages of publisher's advertisements at end.

    Original embossed plum boards, gilt lettering on spine. Light wear to board edges and corners; spine ends worn. Front board has begun to separate from binding; gilt lettering on spine is worn away. Moderate fading to boards and spine. Preliminary pages dampstained and foxed, terminal pages foxed.
