    Mark Twain. Two First Editions Related to Life on the Mississippi, including: Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First edition, intermediate A, with tail-piece depicting an urn, flames, and head of Mark Twain, page 441; and caption reading "ST. CHARLES HOTEL," page 443. Inscribed by A. B. Shute, a nineteenth-century artist and one of three illustrators of Life on the Mississippi, on a front flyleaf. Also with a drawing mounted to the verso of the front free endpaper that appears to be embellished by hand, perhaps by Shute, whose pencil initials appear at the lower right corner. Octavo. 624 pages. With over 300 illustrations in text. Publisher's brown cloth with vignettes stamped in gilt on front and spine, gilt titles on spine and additional floral decoration in black on front board. Tiny spot of soiling on front board. Mildly shaken spine. An excellent copy with bright boards, lightly rubbed with modest wear to corners and spine ends. Near fine. [and:] The Suppressed Chapter of "Life on the Mississippi". [New York: Published Anonymously, circa 1913]. First edition, limited to 250 copies of which this is number 9. Single leaf folded to 4 pages. Light fold line through both leaves. Tipped into book, after rear endpaper. Near fine. Both items housed in custom slipcase.

    Life on the Mississippi contained some 310 illustrations, done by three different artists - the prestigious landscape painter Henry Garrett; John J. Harley, who did most of the work; and A. B. Shute.
