With Psychedelic Kesey Inscription Laid In

Ken Kesey. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. New York: The Viking Press, 1962.

First edition, first issue. Octavo. 311 pages. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. With a 3 x 5 inch card colorfully inscribed "For Tony / Ken Kesey" laid in. True to form, Kesey has adorned the card with a stamped image of the Tin Woodsman from The Wizard of Oz. Kesey's signature is more art than script having been writ large in psychedelic colors.

Original green cloth with titles on the spine stamped in yellow. A crisp copy internally and externally, fine; in a bright first issue dust jacket, modestly worn at the edges with a trivial spot on the spine panel affecting the "y" in "Kesey." Housed in a stunning green leather clamshell case with raised shapes on the front board and titles stamped in gilt on a leather spine label.

Kesey's amazing first book and a cornerstone of Sixties literature which helped in large measure to shape a generation's attitude toward authority and power. This is the true first edition retaining all of the original text portions which were subsequently cut as a result of a lawsuit against Kesey and his publisher. This title is notorious for condition problems, but this copy has miraculously escaped other than very minor wear.
