A Signed Edition, Limited to Only One Hundred Copies

Kahlil Gibran. Twenty Drawings. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1919.

Special edition limited to 100 copies, of which this is number 74, signed by Gibran. Large quarto. Unpaginated. Twenty plates, all black and white except the color frontispiece, all with captioned tissue guards. Introductory essay by Alice Raphael.

Original vellum-backed gold paper-covered boards; spine lettered in gilt, front board stamped in orange. Boards significantly rubbed, with wear to edges and corners. Vellum somewhat soiled. One tissue guard and the recto of the drawing "The Great Longing" with minor surface loss, not affecting the plate. A bookplate -- no longer adhered -- is laid in, with a ghosted glue stain to front pastedown. Very good.

A collection of the Lebanese poet's drawings, most of which are nudes. Rodin is quoted in Alice Raphael's introduction as having said: "I know of no one else in whom drawing and poetry are so linked together as to make him a new Blake." From the Estate of John McLaughlin.
