John Updike. The Carpentered Hen and other tame creatures. Poems by John Updike. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1958]. First edition of the author's first book. Inscribed by Updike on the rear free endpaper (upside-down!): "for Caroline Rogers/Best wishes/John Updike". Laid-in is a Typed Letter Signed by Ms. Rogers, on Reader's Digest stationery and dated "May 21, 1970" requesting that Updike sign her book. Below her signature, Updike has responded in holograph: "happy to - if you send it with/stamped return book envelope/J. U." Also laid-in is the original envelope for the letter, addressed in Updike's hand. Octavo. [xii], 82, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth backstrip over paper-covered boards, front cover and spine stamped in gilt. Original pictorial dust jacket. Very minor rubbing to jacket. Fine. A wonderful book and letter, of the highest interest to the modern first collector.
