John Steinbeck. The Grapes of Wrath. Garden City, New York: Sun Dial Press, 1941. Reprint of first edition of 1939 published by Viking. Inscribed by Steinbeck to Emilio Fernandez, the famed Mexican director and actor, "For Emilio (Kekupao) Fernandez / in hope that / we will have more grapes than wrath / John Steinbeck." Octavo (7.75 x 5.25 inches; 197 x 133mm). [1-2], 3-619 pages. Dust jacket chipped and toned, with white paper backing and a glassine wrapper, but otherwise good. Book internally is in very good to near fine condition.

Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is considered one of the great works of American literature. The novel, which follows the sharecropping Joad family, driven from their Oklahoma farm, as they seek a new life of dignity and honest work in California, was a bestseller and won Steinbeck the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1940. The book inspired the classic 1940 movie, starring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. The most recognizable of Steinbeck's works, The Grapes of Wrath, was undoubtedly instrumental in his receiving the Nobel Prize in 1962. Emilio Fernandez, to whom the author inscribed this copy, directed The Pearl, the cinematic adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's novella, with the screenplay written by both men. The book comes with University Archives COA.

A nice copy of this edition of Steinbeck's monumental work.
