    H. G. Wells. The Time Machine. An invention. New York: Henry Holt & Co., 1895. True first edition, first printing, with the author's name listed as "H. S. Wells" on the title page and throughout the text. Signed by the author to a tipped-in page before the half-title. Small octavo. [vii], [1, blank], 216, [2, blank], [6, publisher's advertisements] pages. Publisher's tan buckram cloth stamped in purple. Cocked, corners bumped, moderate edgewear, spine sunned, somewhat rubbed and soiled, small abrasion to the upper board. Cream endpapers; lacking front free endpaper, front hinge somewhat crudely repaired, toned, minor foxing, library call number sticker to the front pastedown. Internally generally clean, top edges trimmed and gilt, other edges untrimmed; Bibliotheque Antonienne Quebec library ink and hole punch stamps to the title page, text block edges toned with minor wear. Housed in custom brown clamshell case, spine stamped in gilt. Very good.

    Currey notes, "Holt edition published prior to Heinemann [London, 1895] edition. A deposit copy was received by the Library of Congress on 7 May 1895 and the book was announce in Publisher's Weekly 18 May 1895. Text of the Holt edition differs significantly from the Heinemann edition and from the New Review serial."
