George R. R. Martin. A Game of Thrones. Book One of a Song of Ice and Fire. New York: Bantam Books, [1996]. First American edition. Signed by the author to the title page and dated 6/30/98. Octavo. 694, [2] pages. Black paper over boards with author's signature stamped in blind to upper board, backed in black cloth, spine decorated in gilt; original illustrated dust jacket. Minor edgewear, foot of spine pushed. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; some text block edgewear, a few pages with creased corners. Dust jacket unclipped ($21.95); minor edgewear. Near fine book with near fine dust jacket.

Though the official publication date of the HarperCollins/Voyager (1996) edition was technically earlier, Bantam went to print several months early in order to distribute copies at the American Bookseller's Association. On his website FAQ, Martin notes that he considers the Bantam edition to be the true first but that the print run was also significantly larger than the UK first edition.
