Eugene Cunningham. Famous in the West. El Paso: Hicks-Hayward Co., 1926. First edition. 12mo. 25 pp. Illustrations. Pictorial wraps. Pamphlet displays some old fold creases and has some extensive old tape repairs to the spine fold, inside cover and outside of the rear cover. Title page detached. Still, this copy is important for an autograph note that appears on the inside rear cover underneath Eugene Cunningham's letterhead which reads in full: "I printed this stationery for Gene -/ Carl Hertzog". Hertzog had only moved to El Paso a couple of years before, so this must surely have been one of his earlier Texas printing jobs.

    More Information:

Ramon Adams, in his Six-Guns and Saddle Leather, considers this item to be exceedingly rare. "This rare little pamphlet was originally published as an advertisement to be distributed by a firm dealing in cowboy-style clothes. It is said to have been published in an edition of sixty thousand copies, but when the dealer discovered how much postage it would take to distribute them, he gave up the idea and destroyed most of the copies." Cunningham provides short chapters on five lawman and outlaws of the Southwest - such as "Jim" Gillett, Dallas Stoudemire, "Billy the Kid," John Wesley Hardin, and Tom Threepersons.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
