A Presentation Copy of the First Tarzan Novel, to Maureen "Jane" Farrow; Together with a Photograph from a Burroughs Visit to the Film Set

Edgar Rice Burroughs. Tarzan of the Apes. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [1914]. Reprint. Inscribed by Burroughs on the free front endpaper: "To / Maureen "Jane" Farrow / with all good wishes / from her old friend / and admirer / Edgar Rice Burroughs / Tarzana, / California / January 31 1938". Octavo. 392 pp. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in black. Top edge stained green (slightly rubbed). Cloth on spine worn at top with some loss and 1.5 inch piece separated at the front joint and loose, light spotting to the spine which is slightly faded. A bit of soiling to the edges, and a couple thumb smudges to the sheets. A few pages with small tears to the bottom edge, most notably on pages 119/120 where the tears are larger. Altogether, and despite the mentioned flaws, still a very good attractive copy and a great association.
[Together with:] Black and white trimmed publicity photograph of Burroughs posing with stars Maureen O'Sullivan and Johnny Weissmuller. Photograph measures 6.5 by 5.25 inches, and has writing, ink stamps and glue residue on the verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
