An Inscribed First Edition of Arthur C. Clarke's First Published Book

Arthur C. Clarke. Interplanetary Flight: An Introduction to Astronautics. London: Temple Press Limited, [1950].

First edition. Inscribed by Clarke on the front free endpaper: "To Fred, with all best / wishes & many happy / memories of London, 1951. / Arthur Clarke." Octavo. 164 pages.

Publisher's light blue cloth with blue stamping on spine. Cloth is rubbed and edgeworn with some small splits and fraying to the bottom edge and corners. Spine is mildly faded and leaning. Dust jacket is heavily edgeworn, chipped, and rubbed; the folds and joints have been internally reinforced with tape. Laid in is a set of six postcards from the Second International Congress on Astronautics, London, 1951. An about very good copy.

Interplanetary Flight is Clarke's first published book. A non-fiction introduction to space exploration, it was written to be accessible to the layman and includes sixteen black and white plates.

Inscribed to Frederick C. Durant, III, a key advisor to the U.S. military, intelligence, and civilian space-flight programs of the 1950s and '60s, and a long-time friend of Clarke.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
