The first autograph produced by Billy Moon for anyone outside the family circle…
A. A. Milne. Fourteen Songs. New York: E. P.
Dutton & Company, [1925]. Early American edition. Signed on
the title page by A. A. Milne, H. Fraser-Simson, and Billy Moon.
Autograph letter signed by Ernest H. Shepard pasted-in
opposite title page and with an autograph postcard in Billy
Moon's hand to the same recipient. Large quarto. 34 pages. With
illustrations throughout by E. H. Shepard. Publisher's red cloth
backed embossed pale blue boards, printed paper label to front
board; corners moderately bumped and edges rubbed, outer edges of
boards moderately sunned and toned with some staining. Cream
colored endpapers, all edges trimmed, hinges broken and text block
entirely detached from boards; newspaper article by May Lamberton
Becker clipped and pasted to rear endpaper recto with illustrations
from that same article pasted to rear endpaper verso, front free
endpaper recto, and copyright page; offsetting from clipped
articles, tape residue stains to end leaves. Internally clean, text
block slightly toned. In original green printed dust jacket,
moderately chipped with losses, primarily to edges but also to
front board affecting a small section of the staff, some staining,
spine panel perishing. Good.Despite aesthetic flaws, a lovely association copy. The autograph letter signed by Ernest H. Shepard, addressed to Mrs. Lamberton Becker, author of the newspaper article is dated July 11/25, and reads in part, "... I have great pleasure in completing this little group of autographs for your book...." The lot also contains an autograph postcard, signed Billy Moon, thanking Mrs. Lamberton Becker for a birthday present, "I do love my Indian war bonnet and revolver, thank you ever so much Billy Moon," (see Thwaite p. 276). A clip of the newspaper article, highlighted in red, remembers, "it was two years since I last saw Christopher Robin, and three since the afternoon when, flat on the hearth-rug and with one eye level to the page, he wrote for me upon the fly-leaf of "Fourteen Songs" the first autograph he had produced for anyone outside the family circle." Having examined the present copy, we can forgive the journalist's misidentification of the title-page for a fly leaf and confidently presume this copy to be the same referenced in the article. A truly unique item, with strong associations to the main actors involved in the production of this title, including the boy who inspired it, Billy Moon.
