Association copy, inscribed and signed by Jackson to Bernard Malamud and his wife, Ann, as follows: "For Ann & Bern - / with warmest affection - / Shirley / September 1962" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 214 pages. Publisher's white cloth over maroon cloth boards with maroon spine titles. Original pictorial dust jacket. Ex-library markings include a stamp to the top edge of the textblock, a reference label to the rear pastedown, two stamps and pencil notations to the copyright page, a date stamped on the verso of the front free endpaper, and, most notably, a bookplate affixed to the front pastedown indicating the book was donated to Bennington College as a "Gift of Bernard Malamud." Minor shelf wear to the book and jacket. Slight lean to the spine. Light rubbing to jacket panels. Very good condition. The Malamuds were frequent guests at Jackson's home in North Bennington, along with other literary lions such as J. D. Salinger and Ralph Ellison.
