DescriptionShirley Jackson. The Haunting of Hill House. New York: The Viking Press, 1959.
First edition. Octavo. 246 pages. Jacket design by Paul Bacon.
Publisher's teal cloth-covered boards shelf-backed in yellow cloth with black titles. Top edge stained black. The book is in excellent condition, with minimal edge and corner wear. Text edges minimally toned. The price-clipped dust jacket shows light sunning to the spine, minor toning to the panels, but not the flaps, and minimal wear at the spine ends. Still, a very attractive near fine copy.
Jackson opened her magnum opus with these lines: "No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
