Sherwood King. If I Die Before I Wake. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1938. First edition. An Inner Sanctum Mystery. Octavo (7.9375 x 5 inches; 201 x 228 mm.). [vi], 309, [1, ad] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, Inner Sanctum device stamped in blind on the front board; top edge stained red; in restored original dust jacket. Boards lightly rubbed with a couple small whitish blemishes to the rear board; touch of wear to the gilt lettering; small closed tear to the cloth at the crown; extremities very lightly worn. Endpapers faintly discolored; textblock lightly browned but the pages are still quite supple; hinges just slightly extended and still holding firm. Dust jacket spine panel dulled; light wear to folds and edges; spine ends restored with most of the publisher's name (crudely) supplied in manuscript ink; folds reinforced, some edges renewed. A near fine copy in an presentable restored jacket. Basis for the 1947 Orson Welles film, The Lady from Shanghai, starring Welles and Rita Hayworth.
