    Description

Eighty-Five Volumes of the "King of the British Pulps"

Sexton Blake Library Bound Volumes. London: Amalgamated Press Ltd., 1926-'60s. Original file copies of issues of the digest-sized British "penny dreadfuls" that have been trimmed and uniformly bound into a set of approximately 85 hardcover volumes (plus plus about 40 loose '60s-era issues), representing the bulk of the long-running series. The digests are in very nice condition with bright covers, supple pages, and mild tanning and wear. Many volumes with labels on front boards reading "This File Volume must not be mutilated, and should be returned at the earliest possible moment"; also with rubber stamps reading "Property of the Stock Room, Bear Alley. Please Return." Very good or better. Not currently in Bookery's.

The character Sexton Blake, sometimes called "the poor man's Sherlock Holmes," was an enormously popular figure in British popular culture, appearing in over 4,000 stories by more than 200 different authors. He starred in his own long-running title, The Sexton Blake Library, which ran from 1915 to 1968 and was published in five "series." A fabulous collection.
