Rare Work from an Important Chilean PhotographerSergio Larrain. Valparaiso. Text by Pablo Neruda. Paris: Editions Hazen, 1991. First edition. Octavo. (vi), 8, (xli). Publisher's wrappers. Fine condition.
Largely street scenes in black and white taken primarily before 1963. Especially noted is the photograph of two little girls running down a set of steps. Taken from behind, this is a wonderful study of contrasts, light and shadow, hard and soft. Larrain (1931-2012) is the foremost Chilean photographer. He only worked in photography for about 20 years. In 1972, he gave up photography to live a life of contemplation.
