    Description

Walter M. Miller, Jr. A Canticle for Leibowitz. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1960. First edition. A rare presentation copy, inscribed by Miller on the front free endpaper to Sherry Gottlieb, owner of the legendary science fiction bookstore, A Change of Hobbit: "Daytona Beach / July 24, 1984 / For Sherry Gottleib / I ask good fortune and / happiness. / Walter Miller, Jr." Laid-in is a small typed postcard by Miller to Sherry Gottlieb, assuming no responsibility in the event the book that she sent to him is lost. Octavo. 320 pages. Publisher's black cloth backstrip over lavender boards. In the original publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine and boards a bit rubbed. Jacket spine a bit toned and rubbed with some minor occasional thumbsoiling. A near fine copy, with an exceedingly rare inscription by Miller, who very seldom signed anything, as he often shunned science fiction fandom and conventions. The Sherry Gottleib association carried by this copy is even more desirable. The first signed copy that Heritage has offered. This book won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1961. Barron, 4-424; Currey, p. 367; Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 30; Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 288-93.

A Change of Hobbit was the oldest and largest science fiction and fantasy bookshop in the world in the 1970's and 1980's. Located in Los Angeles, it quickly became a leading light for science fiction and fantasy collectors, as well as a meeting place for science fiction luminaries of the time, including Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Forrest J. Ackerman, Larry Niven, David Gerrold, and many more.
