    Description

Pierre Boulle. Planet of the Apes. New York: [1963]. First English-language edition.

    More Information:

Pierre Boulle. Planet of the Apes. New York: The Vanguard Press, [1963]. First edition in English, translated by Xan Fielding. Octavo. [viii], 246, [247-248: blank] pages. Publisher's black quarter-cloth, lettered and stamped in grey, orange and white, over light grey paper-covered boards, decoratively stamped in grey, orange and white, orange topstain, in original dust jacket. Tiny stain on recto of first leaf (offset from orange endpaper), else a fine copy in very good dust jacket with rubbing to head and tail of spine panel and front corner tips, with minor loss at head of spine panel and upper front corner tip, some age-darkening, mostly internal, but with some light show through on rear panel, and just a bit of fading to red title lettering on the spine panel. Overall, an attractive copy.

Translation of La planete des singes (1963). Basis for two films and numerous sequels. "Boulle made the Earth astronauts' visit to a far planet where apes are the dominant species and humans a despised under class a parable of racial and other social failings on Earth ..." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-143. Survey of Science Fiction Literature IV, pp. 1692-96.
