The Very Rare First Combined American Edition of Verne's The Mysterious Island

Jules Verne. The Mysterious Island. The Modern Robinson Crusoe. Translated from the French by W. H. G. Kingston. Complete in Three Parts. I. Dropped from the Clouds. II. Abandoned. III. The Secret of the Island. New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., 1876. First combined American edition. One thick octavo volume. [xxvi], 310, [ii], 304, [ii], 299, [1, blank], [4, ads], [2, blank] pages. With 145 illustrations throughout. Publisher's full green cloth, pictorially stamped in black and gilt on front board and spine, ruled in blind on rear board, yellow coated endleaves. Some minor wear to spine, some rubbing and very minor soiling to binding, upper corners slightly bumped. Light thumbsoiling to endleaves, minor occasional soiling in text. Despite these fairly minor flaws, this is a fine copy in unusually nice condition, especially when one considers the bulk of the text block and the fact that the binding is better suited to a less bulky work (the hinges are, remarkably, intact). In 1875, this publisher had published the three parts of this title as separate books; a year later they issued this combined volume, with all of the text and illustrations more or less intact (hence the three separate paginations within). This story contains the final appearance of Captain Nemo. "A very rare edition!" (Myers). Myers 42.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
