Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii-x] 1-275 [276: blank] [277-278: ads], original decorated blue-gray cloth, front panel stamped in red-purple and black, spine panel stamped in gold. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, several small scuffs to spine panel, a very good copy.

    This issue has the cancel title leaf with 1893 copyright date (as do most or nearly all copies). This first printing consisted of 1500 copies, all printed in America for both U.S. and Macmillan UK issues, both editions to be issued simultaneously on 10 March 1893. This collection of five stories includes two borderline supernatural tales; "Sir Dominick Ferrand" and "Nona Vincent." Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 903. BAL 10600 (noted state 2).
