The Rare First Issue with the Author Listed as "H. S. Wells"

    H. G. Wells. The Time Machine. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1895. First edition, first issue of Wells' first full-length fictional work, with the author mis-identified as "H. S. Wells" on the title page. Sixteenmo. viii, 216, [2, blank], [6, publisher's advertisements] pages. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Publisher's tan buckram with title and decorations stamped in purple. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Noticeable dust-soiling and staining to boards. Front board slightly bent along a diagonal hairline crack. Mild insect damage to the edges of the front endpapers. Very short marginal tear to the frontispiece. Internally, the text is very clean. Very good.

    More Information:

This, the American edition, preceded the British edition by about three weeks. Most copies of this first printing were recalled by Holt prior to sale and rebound with a corrected title page. The Henry Holt edition of this foundation to modern science fiction is a slightly shorter variant than the Heinemann edition which came to be the definitive version.

    Currey 424. Hammond B1. Wells 4.
