    Description

    One of Twelve Copies

    H. G. Wells. The Red Room. Chicago: Stone & Kimball, [1896]. One of twelve copies submitted to the Library of Congress for copyright purposes. Cover title with date misprinted as MDCCCVCVI and "Surplus Duplicate Library of Congress" rubber stamped to verso. Deposited for copyright on February 7, 1896 and published eight days later in The Chap-book, subsequently appearing in the March 1896 issue of The Idler, published by Chatto and Windus. Eight leaves. [ii], 320-[330], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's threaded binding in self-wrappers. Self-wrapper centerfold ends splitting, some other minor chips and closed tears to edges, light soiling, "8976" written in holographic ink on title page. A very good copy of a genuine rarity. Of the twelve original copies, there appears to be just two institutional holdings, one at The Huntington and the copyright deposit copy in the Library of Congress. Currey, 421. Wells 7. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells, with McMurtry's bookplate.
