    More Information:

Frederik Pohl and C[yril] M. Kornbluth. Gladiator-At-Law. New York: Ballantine Books, [1955]. First edition, signed Frederik Pohl on the title page. Small octavo. [iv], 171, [172: publisher's ad] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in black, in original dust jacket. Text block lightly age-darkened (less than is usually the case with this book), a fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with 40 mm closed tear at top edge of front panel near spine fold with internal tape mend, two faint wrinkles to spine panel, and touch of wear at upper spine end. A very nice copy of a very scarce Ballantine hardcover.

A satirical attack on near-future capitalism, in which the hero is a crusading lawyer who braves the slums of Belly Rave ('Belle Reve') where the populace are sustained, Roman-fashion, by bread and circuses. Eventually he becomes a (literal) gladiator, fighting for the people's cause. Excellent, amusing detail, even if the denouement is a bit hard to credit: it's the authors' best collaboration after The Space Merchants. - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 155. Anatomy of Wonder (1987) 3-311. Berger, Science Fiction and the New Dark Age, p. 120. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 258. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 894-8.
