Edgar Rice Burroughs. Thuvia. Maid of Mars. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1920. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 125 mm.). [8], 256, [12] pages. Frontispiece and nine additional tipped-in plates, printed presumably as-issued on pale yellow paper. Publisher's olive green cloth, front board and spine stamped in black; in the original illustrated dust jacket. Spine slightly skewed; minor wear to extremities of binding, particularly at head and foot of backstrip; spot of damp staining to upper margin of rear board. Page edges somewhat toned; occasional marginal thumbsoiling; paper faintly yellowed with age; soft horizontal crease across width of plate facing page 56. Bookplate on front pastedown with inked ownership inscription at head of front free endpaper. Dust jacket edges lightly chipped at the head and foot of spine panel, flap folds; wear with some short tears to folds; darkening of spine panel with small round damp stain at author's name; rubbing and toning to rear panel, a few drops of soiling resembling glue or another tacky substance; edge wear at top. Tape mend visible on reverse of dust jacket; damp stain carries through on spine panel; some areas of wear, offsetting, bleeding from color correction at front panel. Very good. The fourth book in Burroughs's "Martian" series. Currey, L. W. Science fiction and fantasy authors, p. 93.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
