    Description

Arthur C. Clarke. The Sands of Mars. London: [1951]. First edition. Inscribed.

    More Information:

Arthur C. Clarke. The Sands of Mars. London: Sidgwick and Jackson, [1951]. First edition. Inscribed by Clarke to Martin Greenberg, who published the American edition of this book (Greenberg also inscribed this copy).

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Martin Greenberg/with all good wishes/Arthur Clarke/(Hope you'll make a/better job of it than this!)". This is the Gnome Press' file copy with the inscription: "Gnome Press/File copy/Martin Greenberg" in the upper corner of the front pastedown. Octavo. [iv], 219, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in black, dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit browned, some rubbing and mild edge wear to jacket, light rubbing to binding. Overall, a near fine copy. Greenberg's Gnome Press published this book in the United States in 1952. An interesting inscription, indicating Clarke's dissatisfaction with Sidgwick and Jackson's work on this book. This is Clarke's second science fiction novel.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
