    More Information:

Alasdair Gray. Lanark. A Life in Four Books. Edinburgh: Canongate Publishing, 1981. First edition. Octavo. [viii], [561], [562-566: blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, in original dust jacket. A fine copy in fine dust jacket.

Gray's "first and most substantial novel is a vast tale whose burly narrative voice shoulders aside questions of genre as impertinences; the protagonist is born, lives and dies in an intensely imagined Glasgow, from which, having been transformed into an alter ego named Lanark, he is transported to the regimented underground dystopia of Unthank, a Hell riddled by transforming metaphorical diseases including one known as dragonhide, which leads to explosive disintegration through excess of bottled-up internal heat or emotion, and others whose victims' remains are exploited by the state for munitions and food; but Unthank also - as the protagonist enters the "Epilogue" - becomes the text of Lanark, through which he wages his way." - FE (online). Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-460. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 4A-121. Pringle, Modern Fantasy: The Hundred Best Novels 77.
