Description
[Zaccaria Seriman.] [Joaquin de Guzman y Manrique.] Viaggi di Enrico Wanton alle Terre Incognite Australi. Venice: Giovanni Tagier, 1749. Two volumes. First edition, second issue, with cancelled title page. Octavo. 188 x 128 mm. a7 [lacking A3, as called for], A-O, P4; [*2], A-T, V2 + frontispieces in both volumes + 22 folding plates. Plates in vol. II printed in color. Full contemporary vellum over boards, red lettering piece to spine titled in gilt. Some scuffing to boards, scattered staining, corners somewhat bumped, some abrasions to spine label. Text block edges speckled red, hinges tight, pencil notation to rear pastedown, foxing and browning throughout; vol. I with dampstaining to fore-edge from I1-end, some off-setting from plates; vol. II with pencil notation to front free endleaf recto, paper repair to lower outer corner of title, repair to fore-edge of plate 12 not affecting image, small tear to bottom edge of F1, hole obscuring word in center of F3, paper repair to H3, tear at bottom edge of K3 touching text. Very good.A scarce first edition of this satirical utopian tale based on Gulliver's Travels, this copy is of particular note due to the fact that many of the plates in vol. II are printed in color. OCLC lists seven copies of this first edition (both first and second issues), of which only four are complete, and only the 1748 first issue held at Harvard has colored frontispieces. The rest contain only black and white plates or lack their plates completely.
An exceptional and unique copy of one of the great rarities of the genre.
