La Hire's Manual of Practical Mechanics

Philippe de la Hire. Traite de Mecanique, ou l'on explique tout ce qui est necessaire dans la pratique des arts, et les proprietes des corps pesants lesquelles ont un plus grand usage dans la physique. Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1695. First edition. Twelvemo. [xii], 492 pages. Illustrated with woodcut illustrations and diagrams throughout the text. Contemporary full brown calf, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Joints cracking, some wear to binding, previous ownership signatures or markings in ink on endleaves, neat owner's signature on title-page. A very good copy.

    More Information:

"Although passed over by the majority if the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. On the theoretical plane, La Hire's treatise was already out of date at the time of its appearance because it ignored Newton's laws of dynamics... on the other hand... he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion following Desargues, of adopting an epicycloidal for gear wheels" [DSB].
