    Pasteur's Early Work on Crystalization

Louis Pasteur. "Recherches sur les relations qui peuvent exister entre la forme cristalline, la composition chimique et le sens de la polarisation rotatoire." Extract from: Annales de Chimie et de Physique, 3rd series, no. XXIV. [Paris: Bachelier, 1848]. First edition of Pasteur's early work on crystalization. Octavo. One folding engraved plate. Contemporary wrappers, stitched. In 1848, at the age of 26, Pasteur presented this paper announcing the discovery of small hemihedral facets on the crystals of nineteen compounds he had studied. Pasteur was perceptive when working with organic molecules in a compound called tartaric acid, a chemical found in sediments of fermenting wine. He basically discovered that certain chemical compounds were capable of having right and left components, being mirror images of each other, and would affect the rotation of light passing through the crystal-bearing compounds. His contribution was important for introducing the study of the structure of molecules in terms of their stereochemistry. [With:] Louis Pasteur. "Recherches sur les alcaloides des quinquinas." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.37. [Paris, 1853]. 4o. Modern marbled paper wrappers. [And:] ________. "Observations sur la maladie des vers a soie." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.61. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1865. 4o. Modern marbled paper wrappers. [And:] ________. "Note sur la selection des cocons faite par le microscope pour la regeneration des races indigenes de vers a soie." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.69. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1869. 4o. Modern marbled paper wrappers, original printed paper wrappers bound-in (some minor chipping to edges of original wrappers). [And:] ________. "Adresse a Academie sur les resultants des educations pratiques de ver a soie, effectuees au moyen de graines preparees par les procedes de selection." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.71. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1870. 4o. Modern marbled paper wrappers, original printed wrappers bound-in (chipping, with some loss, to original printed wrappers). [And:] ________. "Note relative aux Communications de M. de Vergnette-Lamotte et de M.P. Thenard adresses a l'Academie dans les seances des 20 Septembre et 4 Octobre." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.69. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1869. 4o. Modern marbled paper wrappers, original printed wrappers bound-in (some repairs to original printed wrappers). [And:] ________. "Educations precoces de graines des races indigenes provenant de chambrees choisies." Extract from: Comptes Rendus, vol.66. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1868. Quarto. Modern marbled paper wrappers. First editions of six contributions to Comptes Rendus by Pasteur, which included his work on pebrine disease and techniques for breeding uncontaminated silkworms, separating racemic acid into left- and right-hand components, and wine-preservation.
