    Refuting Spontaneous Generation

Lazzaro Spallanzani. Dissertazioni due. Modena: Bartolomeo Soliani, 1765. First edition. Small quarto. Approximately 8.5 x 7 inches. [iv], 87, [1, blank], [iv], 44 pages. With two folding engraved plates inserted. Contemporary speckled paper over limp boards (original binding stab-holes visible throughout), manuscript paper label on spine. Binding worn, front joint and hinge worn, first two blanks a bit loose, some dampstaining to inner margin of first and last leaves, some foxing throughout. With the armorial bookplate of the prominent Araldi family of Modena on the rear pastedown, as well as a signature of a member of that family on the front pastedown and the title-page, and the bookplate of Andras Gedeon on the front pastedown. Overall, a very good copy. Housed in clamshell case.

    More Information:

"Spallanzani, a believer in preformation theory, found that he could prevent contamination by microorganisms in strongly heated infusions protected from aerial contamination, but he observed that as soon as air was allowed to enter the flask, microorganisms proliferated. He was one of the first to dispute the doctrine of spontaneous generation." (Garrison and Morton).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
