    A "Superior" Issue of Thirty-two Engravings
    for Adams' Work on the Microscope

    George Adams [Jr.]. Plates for the Essays on the Microscope. London: Printed for the author, by Robert Hindmarsh, 1787. First edition. Oblong folio. (2) 32 pages. Thirty-two pages of engraved plates, most of objects being viewed under microscope, but some of microscopes and related equipment. Later quarter calf, rubbing to edges and spine, title in gilt, marbled endpapers. Title page toned, a small hole where the "D" is in "LONDON" on title page, also small tear at bottom of title page, not affecting text. Plate 7 slightly trimmed at top. Slight damp stain to top blank margin of first few leaves, occasional spots of light soiling, else nice copy overall. Usually found in a smaller quarto size with folding plates and text (not included here), this issue is superior with all plates lying flat, unfolded in an oblong folio binding.     "George Adams, the younger (1750-1795), was the son of George Adams, the mathematical instrument maker to George III, and succeeded his father in that office and in the superintendence of his business. He was the author of a large number of elementary scientific works which were so planned as to compromise a regular and systematic instruction in the most important branches of natural science with all its modern improvements. He also wrote largely on the use of mathematical instruments and his books on that subject were highly valued... He died 14 August 1795, at Southampton, and was succeeded in his business and in the post of mathematical instrument maker to the king by his brother, Dudley Adams. His works include An Essay on Electricity, Essays on the Microscope, An Essay on Vision, Astronomical and Geographical Essays... - DNB, Vol. 1: 97.
