    Description

A Sixteenth-Century Edition of Galen's "Art of Medicine"

Galen. Liber absolutissimus, quem technen iatriken [Greek transliterated], hoc est, Artem Medicinalem, inscripsit...[Translated by Niccol├▓ Leoniceno and Giovanni Manardo. Edited by Johann Agricola Ammonius]. Basel: [Apud Bartholomaeum Westhemerum impensis Joannis Oettel civis Nurenberg. excusum], 1541.

Early Latin edition of Galen's Ars medica ("Art of Medicine"), also known as the Ars parva, Tegni, or Microtechne. Small octavo (6.125 x 3.875 inches; 156 x 99 mm.). [30], [2, blank], 493, [1, colophon], [1, blank], [1, printer's device] pages. Collation: [alpha]8 [beta]8 A-Z8 a-h8. Numerous errors in pagination. Text in Latin, with some Greek. Roman, italic, and Greek types. Single column, 25 lines plus headline. Full-page woodcuts of skulls on pages [206] and [207], diagrams on pages 110-115. Historiated woodcut initial. Woodcut printer's device on verso of final leaf.

Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over thin boards (possibly by Andreas Weckherlin, of Kempten). Front cover with an outer roll of four figures, including "Karolus," and a center panel with the initials the "A W" and date "MDLI" (1551). Spine in four compartments with raised bands. Label removed from the upper two compartments, "Galen" in black in the second compartment, and "42" in blue in the third compartment. The binding is rubbed and darkened, with a few tiny wormholes, boards a bit bowed, a few small stains on the edges of the text block. Pencil and red pencil annotations on the front endpapers and at head of title. Front endpapers starting to separate at the lower gutter. Occasional mostly faint marginal dampstaining, some staining on leaf [beta]3v (preliminary page [22]) and on A1r (page 1). Small wormtrack in the text, affecting a few letters, from leaves b4-h8 (pages 391-[496]), onto the rear endpapers and rear board. Overall, a very good, crisp copy.

Adams G72. Durling, Chronological Census, 1541.10.
