    Charles Darwin. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. London: John Murray, 1859. First edition, first printing. Octavo in 12s. [iii]-ix, [1, instructions to binder], 502 pages with folding diagram, lacking half-title and inserted advertisements. Publisher's green cloth, seemingly variant a with "London" measuring 16 mm, covers stamped in blind, spine decorated and lettered in gilt; heavily restored, recased and with original spine laid down, corners refreshed, restorations with color applied to covers, some wear and staining, a bit scuffed. Brown coated endpapers, edges roughly trimmed; minor staining to text-block edges. Text block foxed with scattered spotting, a bit thumbsoiled, small chips and tears primarily to margins, a few ink annotations in text, fore-edge of title page reinforced to verso, reinforcement repairs to gutters of title page and first two leaves of Contents, small tear in the fore-edge margin of page 12 repaired with cello-tape, moderate chips with losses to page 169/170 amateurly repaired with tape, tear to top margin of page 335/336 repaired with cello-tape and just touching heading, two cello-tape repairs to two Index leaves. Housed in a drop-back clamshell of quarter crushed morocco over green cloth boards, spine with five raised bands and lettered in gilt, boards ruled in gilt; minor wear and staining. Despite flaws, a good copy of this first edition, "Darwin's greatest work and one the most important books ever published," (Garrison and Morton).
