First edition, journal issue, of Einstein's fundamental statement of the general theory of relativity. Octavo. Whole volume: viii, 1000 pages. One collotype plate (portrait of "E. Wargburg, geboren am 9 März 1846," mounted on heavy brown card stock) and four halftone plates; text illustrations. "Eingegangen 20. März 1916" at foot of page 822. Contemporary quarter dark brown roan, ruled in blind, over marbled boards, with cream-colored cloth tips, spine ruled and lettered in gilt and decoratively tooled in gilt at top and bottom; edges sprinkled red; gray green floral-patterned endpapers. Binding rubbed, especially at corners and board edges, with a few areas of surface loss and with boards exposed; a few scuff marks and scratches; joints rubbed. Endpapers browned at the edges. Very slight creasing in the upper portion of the text throughout; tiny tear and ding to outer edge of pages 455 to 480 (paper flaw), with pieces of paper becoming detached; very occasional smudging or soiling; a few tiny spots in the lower margin of page 809. Embossed stamp of the "Carnegie Institution of Washington Geophysical Library" on front free endpaper, front flyleaf, half-title, and title-leaf. A very good copy. Housed in a quarter brown calf gilt over paste paper boards clamshell case. Grolier/Horblit 26c; Norman Library 695; Printing and the Mind of Man 408; Weil 80.
