[Together, as issued, with his:] Nöthiger Unterricht von Verbesserung der Sach-Uhren...Mit nöthigen Figuren. Halle: Wäysenhaus, 1756. Two works in one octavo volume (6.875 x 4 inches; 175 x 100 mm.), each work in two parts. [24], 109 [i.e., 106] pages; engraved frontispiece portrait, [2] folded leaves of tables, [8] folded leaves of plates; [16, including engraved frontispiece portrait and title leaf], 210, [22], plus engraved frontispiece, two folding tables (between pages 80 and 81, and 172 and 173), and ten (of sixteen) folding plates; [16], [8], 90, [6, Register], plus one folding plate. Title-pages printed in red and black. Contemporary paper over scaleboard (thin wooden boards). The binding is worn, and has suffered from considerable biopredation. Most of the paper covering the boards has been lost, all of the spine covering; several wormtracks in the rear board. The text is browned; marginal dampstaining throughout, with traces of mold in a few places. Portions of several of the folding plates in the Leutmann works have considerable damage by biopredation. Five of the folding plates between the two works by Hartmann have been torn away, as well as the last portion of the thirteenth plate. Lower portion of the final leaf of the Register in the second Hartmann work. Good. "The first detailed treatise on clocks and watches." (Baillie. Clocks and Watches, p. 147).

More Information: Hartmann's work is the uncommon first and only edition of his technical guide to clockmaking, issued together with an improved edition of his guide to constructing pocket-watches. The two works are embellished with fifty-four figures on seventeen folding plates, and an engraved portrait of the author, a resident clock-maker in Jena. Hartman's third chapter is devoted to a subject evidently of wide contemporary interest-the application of clocks to astronomical measurements. Organized into eight chapters (of which his separately-paginated treatise on pocket-watches forms the eighth), Hartmann prefaces his substantial work by complaining that modern writers on clockmaking care only for theory rather than practice. Lamenting the fact that one learns nothing of clockmaking in schools or universities, Hartmann promises to deliver an eminently practical guide to his reader.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
