    More Information:

Samuel Johnson. The Rambler. London: Printed for T. Longman, B. Law and Son, H. Baldwin, H. Robson, et al., 1793.

The Twelfth edition. 1793. Four volumes. 322 [1] ad, [6], 304 [2], 319 [5], 264 + [30] Index, pages. Four engraved frontispieces, one in each volume, volume one being a portrait of Johnson.

Bound in full contemporary calf with flat spines ruled and numbered in gilt, red leather labels lettered in gilt. A lovely, very attractive set in a contemporary binding, the only flaws being a folded, wrinkled rear endpaper in volume one and ownership signatures on front endpapers and atop title pages.

Johnson's essays in the Rambler, dating from forty years earlier, reveal why he is still such a contemporary figure today. He writes of anxiety, frustration, and disappointment. Some dashed off at a moment's notice, others more thought out, they are moralistic, didactic, and sharp.
