    Two Rare Works on the Kabbalah

    Samuel Gallico and Menachem Azariah da Fano. [Hebrew Text:] Sepher Ps'amon Ve'rimon-Assis Rimonim [with] Menachem Azariah's, Pelech Ha'rimon. Amsterdam: Moses Dias, 1708. First edition thus. Quarto. [4], 89, [1] leaves = 188 pages. Folding double-page "Ilan" Kabbalistic chart, text cuts, typographic borders, and typographic head-pieces. Contemporary calf-backed boards chipped and lacking most of spine, front joint and hinge cracked, rear joint cracked, all edges colored yellow, text block trimmed with only minor loss to text on first few pages, minor marginal worming, paper toned, splits in folding chart at fore-edge (caused by trimming), one repaired with archival tissue, owner's stamp on title page from the London Beth Din, otherwise, internally, a good copy.     Gallico, rabbi and kabbalist, published a summary of Moses Cordovero's Pardes Rimmonim under the title Asis Rimmonim in Venice 1601.

    Azariah Da Fano (1548-1620), Italian rabbi and kabbalist, who was recognized as the foremost expert in the West on Moses Cordovero's kabbalistic system. He was a patron of Jewish learning and paid for Cordovero's Pardes Rimmonim to be published in Salonika in 1584. His great kabbalistic work, the Asarah Ma'amarot, has only had parts printed.

    This commentary was attributed to Shabbetai Sheftel Ben Akiva Horowitz by Furst and Benjacob but is by Mordecai ben Jacob of Prague (see Encyclopedia Judaica 8:1003.)
