First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page: "For Elizabeth / on her birthday / wishing her many happy / returns of the day - / Samuel Beckett." Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 185 x 124 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 72 pages. Publisher's very light brown textured paper-covered boards, lettered and illustrated in dark brown; in original dust jacket. Rebacked with original spine skillfully laid down. Spine leaning very gently; backstrip faintly browned; spine ends and upper corners very lightly worn; board edges lightly soiled; boards lightly foxed. Top edge of text block somewhat dust-soiled; fore-edge lightly foxed; endpapers very faintly discolored, with just a touch of foxing; small bruise to the front endpaper, from the erasure of some red ink. Dust jacket spine panel browned; folds softly creased; occasional light soiling or rubbing; flap folds and edges lightly discolored. A very good rebacked copy, expertly repaired, in a very good dust jacket. Beckett's second book, following Whoroscope, a four-page poem, the previous year. One of the earliest studies of Proust and a significant work of literary criticism. From the Marilyn R. Duff Collection.
