Both volumes in the original publisher's cloth, Les Dîners of Gala in color pictorial cloth lettered in black and stamped in white on front cover and spine, and The Wines of Gala in white cloth pictorially stamped in colors and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine.
Very light foxing to top edge of boards and text block of each volume. Les Dîners de Gala with minimal rubbing to foot of spine and lower board edges, and very slight browning at the edges. The Wines of Gala with a small faint smudge on page and a small stain on page . Each volume in the original embossed gold foil pictorial dust jackets with mylar protective covers (tiny chip to top edge of rear panel of one of the protective mylars). The Wines of Gala dust jacket very lightly browned at the edges on the verso. Apart from these minor flaws, this is a very fine set, dedicated to Dali's wife and muse, Gala. The jackets show almost no signs of wear, without any of the usual surface scratching. Uncommon in such nice condition. From the library of John Carroll Collins.

"When six years old I wanted to be a cook Dali wrote. He is now sixty eight and his ambition is fulfilled in the shape of a book" (front flap of dust jacket). Les Dîners de Gala contains 136 recipes in twelve categories "Les caprices pincés princiers" (exotic dishes); "Les cannibalismes de l'automne" (eggs - sea food); "Les suprêmes lilliputiens" (first course); "Les entre-plats sodomisés" (meats); "Les spoutniks astiqués d'asticots statistiques" (snails - frogs); "Les panaches panaches" (fish - shell fish); "Les chairs monarchiques" (game - poultry); "Les montres molles 1/2 sommeil" (pork); "L'atavisme désoxyribonucléique" (vegetables); "Les 'je mange GALA'" (aphrodisiacs); "Les pios nonoches" (sweets - desserts); and "Les délices petits martyrs" (hors-d'oeuvre).
"All the recipes in this cook book, never before published, have been elaborated with great precision by a 'chef' wishing to remain in the most secret anonymity. Lasserre, Maxim's, la Tour d'Argent, Le Buffet de la gare de Lyon have graciously bestowed upon us some highly gastronomical recipes which make the renown of the French cuisine" (Colophon).
"No vin ordinaire, [The Wines of Gala] combines the great Salvador Domenech Felipe Jacinto Dali and the world's greatest wines to produce a refreshing blend of art, fun, and information. The illustrations are unique in their variety and visual humor. Among the numerous reproductions of Dali's paintings and drawings are several that he created expressly for this book. Then he has taken late-nineteenth-century French academic works and fifteenth-century miniatures depicting the wine-making process and altered them, giving them his own inimitable stamp" (front flap of dust jacket).
Part I of the book gives detailed descriptions of "Ten Divine Dali Wines" by Max Gérard: "The Wine of Ay," "The Wine of Shiraz," "The Wine of King Minos," "Lacrima Christi," "Châteauneuf-du-Pape," "The Great Red Bordeaux Wines," "Romanée-Conti," "Château d'Yquem," "Sherry," and "The Wines of California," conveying the general history of wine since man first discovered the pleasures of fermented grape juice. In Part II, "Ten Gala Wines," Louis Orizet regroups the world's wines into ten categories according to the sensations they produce: "Wines of Joy," "Wines of Purple," "Wines of Aestheticism," "Wines of Dawn," "Wines of Sensuality," "Wines of Light," "Wines of Generosity," "Wines of Frivolity," "Wines of Veils," and "Wines of the Impossible," including botanical or chemical information on the growing of grapes and the making of wine, gastronomical notes on which foods go best with each wine, and a long section filled with practical advice on the storing, serving, and drinking of wine.
