Mitchell Senior and his son are ranked amongst the most prominent and successful map and atlas publishers in the history of the United States. Mitchell Sr. established an early reputation for clean, precise, and finely-detailed maps, and his son quickly followed suit. The elder Mitchell retired from the business in 1860, just as his son started issuing his highly popular New General Atlas series, eventually issued in a number of editions and many subsequent reprints. At its height, the Mitchell company employed over 250 people and sold over 400,000 publications annually. From the A.D. Andrews Collection of Southern and Natural History
