    Description

S[amuel] Augustus Mitchell. A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California, with the Regions Adjoining. 21.75" x 23.5", hand-colored, Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1847. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1845 by H.N. Burroughs..." Mounted on linen.

The 1847 version of Mitchell's map of the American West, one of the first large format maps made after the annexation of Texas. It appears at auction less frequently than the 1846 issue. Mitchell also produced a four-sheet wall map of the United States, and the map offered here was likely an inset to that map. Texas includes claims in the Upper Rio Grande, which are now part of New Mexico.

Condition: Toning throughout with foxing. Numerous small tears have been reinforced by the linen backing and do not have a great effect on the map as a whole.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
