Rod McKuen. Manuscript Notebook/ Sketchbook. 1977.

    More Information:

From the Estate of Rod McKuen.

Blank book with silver paper covered boards, all edges silver. New York's "Fante" sticker on the rear pastedown. Approximately 128 leaves, most still blank.

Entries in the book are not all grouped together. Includes a two-paged poem dated "14 Sept. 77" beginning "On the road/ down the road/ people missed/ and people found.." (one side and two lines); a page with the address of Ivor Derber/ Patrick Rous in South Africa and the number of Hans Van Nimwegen; two full page pen line drawings of trees; a pen drawing of a kite; a short printed piece of his from Folio No. 7, Fall, 1975, titled "Goodbye" attached to a blank page with masking tape around its borders; the caustic poem "Ode to Idi Amin/ suitable time to rename ourselves" written on an envelope with a Johannesburg ink postal stamp (29.8.77) which has been taped onto a blank page, a pen drawing of a branch, and a one side poem dated "24 Sept 77" "A few more days/ and then it ends./ A man can only try.."

The "Ode to Idi Amin" is most likely in response to the official announcement by Radio Uganda in 1977 of their leader's new title: "His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Alhaju Dr, Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE". Earlier Great Britain broke off diplomatic relations with Uganda and Amin declared himself the "Conqueror the British Empire" or "CBE."

Boards lightly rubbed and scratched, light discoloration to the borders of the kite drawing from masking tape on "Goodbye". "Ode to Idi Amin" envelope lightly soiled, small paper lifts from removed sticker, ink marker on lower right corner, and bleedthrough transfer from masking tape on "Goodbye". Few corner bends or creases. Very good.
