    Description

Robert William Billings: Architectural Illustrations, History and Description of Carlisle Cathedral (London: Published by Thomas and William Boone and the Author, 1840), vi, 92 pages plus 44 engraved architectural design plates (mostly by the author), brown half leather binding with marbled boards and gilt spine titles, folio (10.5" x 13.5"). Bound with Robert William Billings: Illustrations of Geometric Tracery, From the Paneling Belonging to Carlisle Cathedral (London: Published by Thomas and William Boone and the Author, 1842), 8 pages plus 19 engraved plates by the author. Billings was the author of several works on architectural design whose greatest work was Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland. Carlisle Cathedral is a small ancient cathedral in the far north of England. This edition of Billings' work on Carlisle Cathedral is in good condition, with noticeable edge wear and some paper loss to the marbled boards. The inner text has some damp staining throughout on the fore-edge of the plates and minor foxing at the endpapers. A handsome edition of one of Billings' major works.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
