First edition, mixed state of text with "dead man's chest" on pages two and seven, battered "v" in "vain" on page forty, the "a" lacking on line six of page sixty-three, the eight is present in the folio of page eighty-three, the seven in folio 127 is present and sagging, lacking the period after "opportunity" on page 178; "worse" for "worst" on page 197. Octavo (7.4375 x 4.75 inches; 188 x 120 mm.). viii, 292, 4 (advertisements, dated July 1883 (5G-783)); frontispiece, captions printed in red, blue and brown, with tissue guard. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; black coated endpapers. Spine leaning; edges and joints worn with a minor bump at the upper edge of the rear joint; spine ends pushed; boards lightly rubbed. Hinges likely cracked then strengthened by gluing the gutter margins of the endpapers together; bruising to the front endpapers; text block slightly sagging; contemporary owner signature and previous owner embossed stamp on the half-title title page; text lightly foxed. Good.
