First separate edition, following publication in the 1884 Pall Mall Christmas Extra; the second title in Merriam's Violet Series. Sixteenmo. 61, [3, ads] pages, four integral full-page illustrations, including frontispiece. Publisher's very light violet cloth, spine and front board stamped and lettered in violet. Backstrip very faintly dulled; shallow ridge (about one-inch in length) to bottom of rear board; spine ends and corners lightly worn; very lightly soiled. Slightly over-opened at title-page and page nine; small, faint stain to bottom of rear pastedown. Still, a nice, near fine copy. Beinecke 608. Adapted for the screen for RKO Radio Pictures in 1945, directed by Robert Wise, starring Boris Karloff and Bela Legosi, and produced by the legendary Val Lewton. From the KoKo Collection.
