"[Stevenson] achieved world-wide success with his 'shilling shocker' Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a moral allegory about the divided self and the problem of evil, the main incidents of which came to him in a dream. The characters of Jekyll and Hyde have become proverbial and the story has been widely translated, reprinted in countless editions, and dramatized (if often distorted) in plays and films" (DNB). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
