First English Edition of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in the Original Wrappers

Robert Louis Stevenson. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886. First English edition. Octavo. [8], 141, [1, blank], pages. Original buff paper wrappers printed in blue and red. With the 1885 date on the front wrapper altered in ink to 1886 [as always]. Ads for Longman's Magazine on inner front wrapper and ads for J.G. Whyte Melville's works on inner rear wrapper. Rebacked, some repairs and simple restoration to wrappers (with some loss to text), some wear, soiling to wrappers, page [1] with a repaired tear near the fore-edge, some minor occasional thumbsoiling. Without the page of ads in the rear. A very good copy of this fragile item. Housed in red cloth chemise and quarter red morocco slipcase.

    More Information:

Published on January 9, 1886, four days after the American edition (which was published by Charles Scribner's Sons on January 5). "It had been intended to publish this book in December, 1885. But, according to Mr. Charles Longman in Balfour's Life, when it was ready the bookstalls were already full of Christmas numbers, etc., and the trade would not look at it" (Beinecke).
