First English edition, wrapper issue, first state with date on the first wrapper corrected in ink by the publisher, signed by Frederic Dannay on the half-title-page as Barnaby Ross and Ellery Queen, pseudonyms for works co-written with his cousin, Manfred B. Lee. Octavo (7 x 4.625 inches; 177 x 117 mm.). [viii], 141, [1, blank] pages (lacking final leaf, K8, with ads). Publisher's perfect binding in original light brown wrappers printed in red and blue, respined in matching paper. Wrappers lightly soiled; edges lightly worn with a couple short closed tears and soft marginal creases. Repair work to inner margin of final leaf, page edges lightly worn with occasional minor marginal soiling; previous owner signature to title-page. A very good restored copy with excellent provenance, housed in a custom clamshell case. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Basis for several films, including John S. Robertson's 1920 adaptation providing John Barrymore with a career-defining role. From the KoKo Collection.
