More Information:
Esnault-Pelterie (1891-1957) had a long history of interest in aviation (he was the fourth person in France to ever hold a pilot's license). He was greatly respected for his experiments in aviation, which led to enclosed steel fuselages, the iconic pilot's stick, and improved wingtips for greater stability. After a terrible accident in 1908 prevented him from piloting again, he turned his considerable abilities to the potential of space flight. He even established a 5,000 Franc prize to be given to the author of the finest work on astronautics (the Prix REP-Hirsch). The first recipient was Hermann Oberth. Norman 714.
